LANSDOWN FILM CLUB PRESENTS: BAIT (2018)

22 mar Bait still.png

LANSDOWN HALL, LANSDOWN, GL5 1BB

Followed by Q&A with the film’s producers.

Bait tells a stark story of local Cornish culture and community facing up to a changing world. Martin Ward is a cove fisherman, without a boat. His brother Steven has re-purposed their father’s vessel as a tourist tripper, driving a wedge between the brothers. With their childhood home now an Airbnb get-away for London money and stag parties, Martin is displaced to the housing estate above the harbour. As his struggle to restore the family to their traditional place creates increasing friction with tourists and locals alike, a tragedy at the heart of the family changes his world. Stunningly shot on a vintage 16mm camera using monochrome Kodak stock, Bait is a poignant, humorous film that gets to the heart of a community facing unwelcome change.

POSTPONED..........THE EDGE OF WONDER: YOUR HEALTH IS IN YOUR GUT

17 March Health Atelier N.jpg

ATELIER, 19A LOWER STREET, STROUD GL5 1DZ

This short documentary film takes viewers on a journey through the vast universe of microscopic life that comprises over 99% of the DNA, and between 50-90% of the cells in our bodies. Science is only just waking up to the deep and fundamental connections that we humans have to our microbial ‘parts’, whether that be to their role in our development as infants, in noncommunicable diseases from Alzheimer’s to cancer, or in maintenance of health. Debbie Cotton, a Naturopath and Lucy Rothwell, MSc from Invivo will follow this short, creative film - which uses dancers, body models and painting to bring the microbiome to life - with a panel discussion to continue the conversation. Ticket sales will be matched by Invivo and donated to Thrive, a charity that uses gardening to bring about positive changes to the lives of people living with disabilities ill health, or who are isolated. And of course, helping them to reconnect with their environmental microbiota.

invivo Healthcare, a Stroud-based B Corp company will be screening The Human Microbiome, episode one of ‘The Edge of Wonder’ series by Osmosis Films.

LANSDOWN FILM CLUB PRESENTS: BEGGARS OF LIFE (1928) WITH LIVE MUSIC SOUNDTRACK

15 Mar Beggars of Life Lansdown.jpg

LANSDOWN HALL, LANSDOWN, GL5 1BB

Silent movie with live musical accompaniment composed and played by luminary of American old-time country music, Kate Lissauer with arguably the UK’s finest Bluegrass guitarist, Jason Titley, plus internationally awarded 5-string banjo great, Leon Hunt. ‘Beggars of Life’ directed by William Wellman the year after he made Wings (first film to win an Academy Award) is a tense drama about a girl (Louise Brooks) dressed as a boy who flees the law after killing her abusive stepfather. With the help of a young hobo, she rides the rails through a male dominated underworld in which danger is close at hand. Picture Play magazine in 1920’s described the film as “Sordid, grim and unpleasant,” adding, “it is nevertheless interesting and is certainly a departure from the usual movie.” If you like country music and iconic silent movies, this is a rare treat not to be missed…

POSTPONED..........OPENING THE EARTH AND THE SOUTH WEST FIBRESHED PROJECT

15 March Opening the earth.jpg

ATELIER, 19A LOWER STREET, STROUD GL5 1DZ

Opening the Earth: The Potato King tells the story of Julio Hancco, an ageing guardian of biodiversity living in the high Andes of Peru. His humble life is in contrast with the global significance of his work and how the modern world may one day depend on him in crisis. But this film is about more than just potatoes - it’s also about culture, diversity and loss of rural skills and knowledge.

After the screening we will draw parallels between the film and the emerging Fibreshed movement in the UK. Emma Hague, founder of South West England Fibreshed and co-founder of Fibreshed UK, began her journey with bioregional textiles 10 years ago in the Peruvian Andes. Grounded in soil-to-soil cycles, community and sense of place, Fibreshed is more than sustainable fashion – it’s also about celebrating our tangible culture and natural resources to rebuild our textile resilience and sovereignty.

Due to popular demand, we have been able to add an extra showing of FIVE SEASONS: THE GARDENS OF PIET OUDOLF.

THE MUSEUM IN THE PARK, STRATFORD PARK, STROUD GL5 4AF

“For me, garden design isn’t just about plants, it is about emotion, atmosphere, a sense of contemplation. You try to move people with what you do. You look at this, and it goes deeper than what you see. It reminds you of something in the genes — nature, or the longing for nature.” – Piet Oudolf

Revolutionary landscape designer Piet Oudolf is known for designing public works like New York City’s popular High Line and the Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park that redefine our conception of gardens as works of art in themselves. This gorgeous, meditative documentary immerses viewers in his work, taking us inside Oudolf’s creative process. From his aesthetic theories to his strikingly abstract sketches to the ecological implications of his ideas, the film poetically reveals how Oudolf upends conventional notions of nature, public space, and, ultimately, beauty itself.

OPEN HOUSE HALL, GLOUCESTER STREET, STROUD GL5 1QG

Following its inhabitants over a four-year period, Zed Nelson’s debut feature-length documentary charts the toxic collision of gentrification, austerity and the nation’s slide into Brexit. This traditional East London street, less than a mile from the City of London, has become the last bastion of the area as it was in a previous decade. However the glinting steel and mirror-glass skyscrapers of London’s financial hub edge ever closer, the area surrounding Hoxton Street has been transformed by ‘luxury’ redevelopments and sky-high property prices.

SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED) - WORK-IN-PROGRESS SCREENING

11 Mar Southern Journey banjo player.JPG

HAWKWOOD, PAINSWICK OLD ROAD, STROUD, GL6 7QW

Ahead of its premiere later this year, we are proud to present a special work-in -progress of this freewheeling film which retraces the route of a 1959 song-collecting trip made by legendary ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. In the company of the then unknown English folksinger Shirley Collins, Lomax visited singers and musicians across the region, recording them in their homes, and thereby collected a definitive cross-section of traditional American roots music. This was at the time of the civil rights struggle when despite being able to vote since 1957, segregation and prejudice were rife. This film retreads the same path in the present day, when the hard-won victories of the civil rights movement were being violently challenged – again. The screening is a unique collaboration between Burning Bridges, Fifth Column Films, Lush and Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking.

Directors Rob Curry and Tim Plester will be take part in Q&A hosted by Matt Shaw of Lush.

Shirley Collins will be in attendance.

ANIMAL FARM

11 Mar animal farm museum.jpg

MUSEUM IN THE PARK, STRATFORD PARK, STROUD GL5 4AF

Inspired by the dream of Old Major, a prize boar, the overworked animals of Manor Farm rise up against their negligent, drunken owner and drive him out. Led by two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, they establish their own self-sufficient farm, but as the farm flourishes it begins to slide into dictatorship...

Halas and Batchelor’s acclaimed feature on George Orwell’s famous satirical fable stands out as an animation classic and remains both fresh and relevant. An outstanding achievement for renowned animators John Halas, Joy Batchelor and Harold Whitaker, this landmark adaptation brilliantly conveys the horror and humour of George Orwell’s scathing satire.

LANSDOWN FILM CLUB PRESENTS: AMAZING GRACE (2018)

8 Mar Amazing Grace-alt.jpg

LANSDOWN HALL, LANSDOWN, GL5 1BB

Extraordinary film footage of Aretha Franklyn recording the most successful gospel album of all time, Amazing Grace, at the New Temple, Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles in 1972. Accompanied by the Southern Californian Community Choir. (plus Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts in the audience). The recording languished for almost 40 years until new digital technology could be used to match the sound to picture and make a film out of the previously un-synched raw footage. This film is a testimony to the greatness of Aretha Franklin and a time-machine window into a moment in American musical and social history.
